About

eikenkai.net

Eikenkai is an informal group of friends in the Kansai area of Japan that seek to promote and develop kendo for the foreign community. We have strong connections in the area and wish to utilise these to make peoples stay or visit in the area a great kendo experience.

What can we do?

People from many countries drift in, out, and through the area without making permanent connections or knowing a good place to practise kendo. We would like to to help out by proactively inviting you to practise with us (be it at members dojos, or at our own small keiko sessions) or help you find a place to practise that suits your needs. Maybe you are not confident in Japanese or maybe you are a beginner. No worries!

Depending on how schedules match we can get a few beers in, eat the local delicacies, and even take you sightseeing.

Who are we?

We are non Japanese nationals living in Kansai. We have members from the U.K., America, France, Turkey, and Canada. People that have visited Kansai over the years have been from countries like Australia, Romania, Germany, Spain, Korea, China, etc….

We have members that are complete beginners up until World Kendo Championship level experience. Obviously we have Japanese members as well.

Membership

There is no fee and there is no formal procedure to join our group. If you are into kendo then that is enough.

Why ‘Eikenkai’?

Simply, the kanji 英 (ei) represents the fact that the starting member is British, and also that the medium for communication will almost probably be English.

The 剣 (ken) is self explanatory, and the 会 (kai) means group/club/association.

Who do I contact?

In the first instance, please get in touch with George. Tell him your:

Kendo experience (years/dan)
Where you are planning to go
When you will be here (maybe you live / are moving to the area?)
What you are looking for
From that we can probably work out exactly whether we can help you straight off, or can start enquiries for you.
