George ran Edinburgh kendo club between 2000 and 2003, before leaving for Japan to pursue his passion of kendo. He has been travelling back to Edinburgh from Osaka on-and-off and doing kendo there since 2008, including running four seminars. From 2017, however, Edinburgh Kendo Club and George decided to make the seminar a more “official” yearly event. In summer 2018 (the 10th year he has been travelling back to Edinburgh, and the 30th anniversary of kendo in Edinburgh) he brought back Yano sensei, a professional police hachidan, with him.
Note that up until and including 2017 the seminars have been mostly private affairs – mainly for Edinburgh Kendo Club, Scottish kenshi, and friends. From 2018 onwards the event is open to all.
